Instead, choose, \u201clives with mental illness\u201d or \u201cis affected by mental illness.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Use \u201cperson first\u201d vocabulary. When we say a person is schizophrenic, we make their mental illness fully define their identity. Instead, be clear that this is a disease that individuals manage and live with \u2014 \u201cHe is living with schizophrenia.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>There are many phrases and terms; \u201ccrazy,\u201d \u201cnuts\u201d, \u201cpsycho\u201d, \u201cschiz\u201d, \u201cretard\u201d and \u201clunatic\u201d that may seem insignificant, but really aren\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While there may be times when it is too challenging or simply not possible to politely correct someone else\u2019s insensitive use of language, you can always watch your own. (From the BringChange2Mind Campaign)<\/p>\n<h1>What Can YOU do to End Stigma?<\/h1>\n<h4>Learn and share the facts about mental health and illness.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>get to know people with personal experiences of mental illness<\/li>\n<li>speak up in protest when friends, family, colleagues or the media display false beliefs and negative stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>offer the same support to people when they are physically or mentally unwell<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t label or judge people with a mental illness, treat them with respect and dignity as you would anyone else<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t discriminate when it comes to participation, housing and employment<\/li>\n<li>talk openly of your own experience of mental illness. The more hidden mental illness remains, the more people continue to believe that it is shameful and needs to be concealed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Join our \u2018YES\u2019 Campaign<\/h4>\n<p>If you are ready to end the stigma, join our \u2018YES\u2019 Campaign. It\u2019s easy! Simply take a photo of yourself with a self designed sign that says \u201cYES\u201d, and e-mail it to our Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
